Food for the Day

Did I mention I LOVE FOOD? My entire savings can't do without a little overboard spending on the food department. So in testimony and evidence, I would be providing you a daily tease on your palate of my very own 24-hr journey with food. Viewer discretion is advised. Dieting prohibited.

Banana Muffin topped with Blueberry fruit bits. A soft, tasty and perfect companion to your bitter coffee. Two healthy fruits in one. Banana for potassium and blueberry for antioxidants. This is definitely one "heart-felt" treat.
Double Chocolate cake.  With a hint of bitterness from the dark choco, it mellows the taste giving you that perfect blend of the chocolate's bitter-sweet sensation in your pallete even as you bite deeper into its fluffy yet soft chiffon cake.  Bitter-sweet memories anyone?
You can enjoy these sweets at the Mamia's Cafe in Dumaguete City, Philippines.

Today calls for a special celebration. My beau of 4yrs proposed to me in one of my favorite places in Bacolod, at The Ruins. It was romantic of him to kneel down by the fountain while the tour guide was capturing snapshots of the moment. Of course the day wouldn't be complete without a special menu to satisfy our appetite. So for today, I present you with three dishes of Mediterannean descent. :-) I suggest you eat prior to reading this.

Basil Pesto Pasta with Focaccia Bread pasta rich in basil grown from the local garden. The Ruins grow their own herbal and vegetable garden, so it's safe to say this dish is a local pride. The pasta was al dente and serves just the right amount and taste of basil-bitterness. The pesto cheese complimented the taste to give it that rich herbal yet tangy taste. The bread was crisp on the outside but soft on the inside.

Callos con Garbanzos is a Spanish phrase which means "tripe with chickpeas". This one was served with green olives and red bellpepper in a thick and rich spicy sauce. It had that sweet yet sour taste with a hint of spice just enough to wake up your inner "hot".

Lamb Chops in pepper cream sauce. I unfortunately didn't get to taste this since I was busy attacking the other two dishes and I forgot that there was a third dish on the way. By the time it was served I was too full to bother lifting a fork. I did ask my beau how it tasted and all he could mutter amidst a mouthful of meat was "Umm..Ummmm.." accompanied with a vigorous nod of the head. So I took that as a compliment.Judging from the looks I can say it was worth the price, taste and the time consumed in cutting and chewing it to bits. He did say that the meat was so tender the knife was unnecessary and the sauce had the right creamy and spicy taste to it that matches the meat perfectly.
So, don't say I didn't warn you about eating prior to reading this.

GY6XRFWJG8W4 I had a pre-introduction of today's food in my recent blog post (Home). Today my palate journeyed to South Korea and sampled some of its finest delicacies. :-) Oh if only my bestfriend Han Na can see this she will be sooo envious!

Samgyupsal is a popular Korean dish consisting of thick, fatty slices of pork belly meat cooked on a grill on the diner's table. Our meat was seasoned with sesame oil and pre-grilled thus cooking time on our table was quick. It was served with Kimchi (a common side dish made from cabbage marinated in pepper sauce), thin sliced garlic, pickled raddish, sesame oil with salt for dip, and their famous samjang or red pepper sauce (kinda like hot sauce for some). Once the meat is cooked you have to wrap it in lettuce or cabbage and dip it in samjang. It's a perfect blend of spicy, sweet and and sour taste.

Dwen jang chigae is another famous Korean food made from soybean paste. Similar to Miso Soup it gives off that rich spicy taste that will definitely tickle your pallete and makes you go "wow!".Consists of beef meat, raddish and tofu. Feeling feverish and having a colds? This dish will certainly chase the fever and colds away.

Naengmyeon is Korean for "cold noodles" and literally that's what we had, even the stainless bowl was chilled. It consists of long and thin noodles made from flour and starch. The soup by smell, gave off that aroma of vinegar and spicy mustard. The taste was of regular beef broth but with a hint of sourness due to the mustard and the raddish combined in the soup. A single boiled egg cut in half was the centerpiece. The perk: we got this  for free in exchange for our opinion on its taste.

So this has definitely been a fulfilling Saturday. Of course it ended with a bitter cup of coffee and gellatto from Kuppa to seal the deal. Thank you slave2tech for the treat.

August 7, 2010 Saturday

Woke up today feeling sick, feverish and with a slight cough. The weather here wouldn't light up. It has been raining for the past days due to typhoon Doming. The streets have been covered with dirty water, and our dining area is flooded with rainwater. The roof is leaking and it would take days before we can have it fixed, what with the rain not going away. It would be too dangerous for the carpenters to go up on the roof, they might slip and it would be our fault. So for now we resigned to having a little exercise everyday scooping up the water with a pail. And then our efforts will still end up in waste because by nighttime it would rain all over again. It's a never ending story. But today, the sun greeted us. Good thing.
Today Doods and I visited our fave Korean resto and friend Kien in Sodam. We had samgyupsal and dwengjangchigge to chase the colds and cough away. It was definitely satisfying to feel the heat of the soup soothe my clogged nose and clear my air passage. For today's treat we had Korean Curry with all the right combination of sweetness and spice we had to order a second round of soft drinks to calm our burning throat.   After dinner we stopped by Star Mart to warm our chilled bones because by then it started to rain again. We bought cappuccino for me and frozen coffee java for Doods. Goodness!! Saturdays and Sundays are what we call Food Trip days. It's only saturday, who knows what we'll be having on Sunday.
